Queen's gate Junior School girls outside in boaters and blazers

Dress Code

At Queen’s Gate we are proud to have a dress code rather than a uniform. Our dress code is rooted in an ethos of strong relationships between pupils and their teachers which meant that a uniform was not felt to be necessary. Modern day Queen’s Gate girls are able to choose their own clothes for school but with this privilege comes the responsibility of looking smart.

Junior School

  • Uniform bobble hats and long navy coats in winter
  • Boater hats and blazers in summer
  • Smart dresses, skirts or trousers
  • Plain tops without logos
  • Smart shoes

Senior School

Skirts, dresses, culottes which are no shorter than 8cm above the knee or smart trousers; small plain studs or a small sleeper for pierced ears (one in each ear lobe, and no other piercings); a simple neck chain with a religious symbol, any shoe, trainer or boot which is not backless, high heeled or platform.

Girls should have a formal outfit and smart coat to wear for certain occasions such as the Remembrance Service and Christmas Carol Service. Girls may wear their own choice of smart outfit, some suggestions include a dress or trousers with a jacket or cardigan, smart separates, or a suit.

Sixth Form

Pupils in Sixth Form are permitted to wear trousers but not leggings, and ripped clothing is not acceptable.

Girls in Senior School and in Sixth Form may not wear:

  • Any other jewellery (Sixth Formers may wear discreet jewellery); make-up, including nail varnish (Sixth Formers may wear discreet make-up and nail varnish);
  • Mini-skirts or floor-length skirts; trousers, shorts or jeans (Sixth Formers may wear trousers and neat jeans);
  • Cropped or low-cut tops which are too revealing, tops with large multi-coloured motifs or slogans.
  • Exaggerated fashion shoes e.g. backless sandals, high-heeled or platform shoes which are not only impractical but dangerous in a building with so many stairs.
  • Frayed or ripped clothing; expensive clothes and bags; tattoos of any description.

Sixth form pupils also need a formal outfit and smart coat to wear for certain occasions such as the Christmas Carol Service. Girls may wear their own choice of smart outfit, some suggestions include a dress or trousers with a jacket or cardigan, smart separates, or a suit.
