Queen's Gate Drama performance at RADA 2022

Drama

Queen’s Gate School Drama is a thriving part of the school, where our girls get the opportunity to explore all aspects of theatrical production.  We our proud to have a number of extremely talented and well-known actors among our alumnae, whose work inspires the next generation of Queen’s Gate girls.

As well as the curricular and co-curricular drama detailed below, the department has its own specialised LAMDA teacher who offers lessons to girls throughout the school. We are proud to boast a 100% pass rate, with girls securing enviable results at all levels.

Invested in guiding girls at every stage of their theatrical journey, our aim is to nurture a lifelong love of Drama and Theatre.

Junior School

Queen’s Gate girls love to perform! Individual music lessons in a wide variety of instruments are available, as well as choirs and orchestras to join. Many performances take place during the year.

I love the school play because it taught us how real theatres work!

IIA (Year 5) Pupil

An appreciation of the Arts is evident throughout the school. Music and Drama are highly prized for their intrinsic value and for the part they play in the personal development of each child.

Senior School

In Years 7 to 9, Queen’s Gate girls develop their knowledge and understanding of key dramatic techniques. They explore a wide range of theatrical styles and examine a diverse variety of texts as both performers and designers.  Teachers create a fun and supportive environment where girls are encouraged to take creative risks from the onset.

At GCSE girls develop and refine their skills in devising and performance. They become adept at analysing and evaluating live theatre and enjoy exploring their prescribed text in practical workshops. Those who wish to extend their skill set go on to study GCE Drama and Theatre Studies. At this level the methodology of two influential theatre practitioners is applied in the practical components, whilst two contrasting texts and a live theatre production are studied for the written examination.

Outside of curricular time our dedicated Drama studio, which boasts its own lighting and sound system, is a hive of activity. Budding performers extend their acting skills at Remove Drama Society or as a member of The Arthur Players. Inspired by the success of past alumni, girls relish the opportunity to perform on stage. The annual Senior School production is undoubtedly a highlight of the academic year and the high standards achieved are a testament to our girls’ talent and hard work. Professional lighting together with costumes hired from ‘The National Theatre’ add that extra sprinkle of magic!  Recent productions include, ’Oh What a Lovely War’, ‘Great Expectations’ and ‘The 39 Steps’.  We firmly believe in empowering our fledgling directors and once a year LVI take the reins, auditioning and directing girls in The LIV Play.

Taking advantage of our close proximity to the West End, girls benefit from watching work created by leading theatre makers. Workshops led by practitioners from renowned Theatre Companies also motivate and encourage girls to find new ways of communicating meaning to an audience.
