Physics

Department Vision

Our philosophy centres on unveiling the marvels of the universe through exploration and experimentation. We view Physics as a vibrant, problem-solving discipline and strive to blend theoretical understanding with practical discovery, demonstrating how it shapes the natural world and drives technological progress. Our main aims are to foster critical thinking and quantitative skills through scientific enquiry, spark awe and curiosity about fundamental concepts such as energy, motion, and the cosmos, and equip pupils with the tools to address real-world challenges using Physics. Through studying with us, pupils develop a strong grasp of physical principles, proficiency in mathematical modelling, and the ability to design and interpret experiments, preparing them for STEM pathways and nurturing a scientific mindset.

Years 7-9

In Year 7, we teach basic energy, basic electricity, and basic forces. These foundational topics introduce pupils to core ideas—how energy moves, how circuits work, and how forces affect objects—using relatable examples like batteries, pushes, and pulls to ignite excitement and build confidence in scientific reasoning. In Year 8, the curriculum progresses to heat, magnets, and light. This builds on Year 7 by exploring how energy transfers through heat, how magnetism interacts with electricity, and how light behaves, fostering practical skills such as experimenting with lenses and magnets while preparing pupils for IGCSE topics. By Year 9, we focus on energy and mechanics. This bridges to IGCSE-level complexity, deepening pupils’ understanding of energy transformations and introducing mechanics, such as motion and forces in action, tapping into their curiosity about how the physical world operates.

GCSE

We follow the Edexcel IGCSE Physics (4PH1) specification. The course covers forces and motion, electricity, waves, energy resources and transfers, solids, liquids, and gases, magnetism and electromagnetism, radioactivity and particles, and astrophysics. This comprehensive curriculum balances classical Physics, like forces and energy, with modern topics such as astrophysics and radioactivity, providing a robust foundation for A Level and highlighting Physics’ role in technology and discovery.

QG Super Curriculum

At QG, our supercurriculum for GCSE Physics pupils offers enriching experiences beyond the Edexcel IGCSE syllabus. Pupils visit the Science Museum, where they explore interactive exhibits and see Physics brought to life, connecting classroom concepts to the real world. We also encourage participation in the Junior Physics Challenge, a national competition that sharpens their problem-solving skills and fuels their passion for the subject. Additionally, participating in Physics Tournament provides a thrilling chance for pupils to collaborate, compete, and apply their knowledge in practical and theoretical challenges, fostering teamwork and a competitive spirit.
