Department Vision
Computer Science is an exciting and dynamic subject that explores the principles and applications of computers. Our mission is to inspire and develop skilled problem-solvers who approach technology with an open yet discerning mindset, ready to embrace the opportunities and challenges brought by AI. We foster intellectual curiosity and a genuine passion for experimenting with code and emerging technologies.
Studying Computer Science encourages independent thinking and creativity, empowering students to devise their own innovative solutions to problems. Throughout the course, students will develop invaluable problem-solving skills, adopt a more logical approach to thinking, and learn to ‘think outside the box’—a skill that benefits not only Computer Science but all areas of study.
This practical subject emphasises hands-on learning through trial and error, making the process both fun and engaging. It’s an opportunity to explore, experiment, and grow in a supportive and stimulating environment.
Years 7-9
In Year 7, students develop foundational programming skills using Scratch, a block-based language, before transitioning to Small Basic, a text-based language. They also gain insights into how the Internet works and complete their first web design project using HTML.
In Year 8, programming concepts such as variables, loops, and conditional statements are reinforced with Python. Students explore hardware programming by manipulating BBC Microbits and enhance their web design skills with CSS and JavaScript, introducing consistent formatting and interactivity.
In Year 9, the focus shifts to problem-solving, with students using flowcharts to break down algorithms systematically. They design interactive programs using VB.Net, learn about computer functionality, and study number systems and logic gates.
Internet safety and AI are integrated across all year groups, fostering critical thinking and preparing students to become confident, responsible digital citizens.
GCSE
Exam Board: OCR
GCSE Computer Science provides students with a comprehensive understanding of computer systems, covering components such as the CPU, memory, storage, data representation, networks, system security, and software. It also addresses ethical, legal, cultural, and environmental aspects of computer science.
Students develop computational thinking skills, including algorithms, programming techniques, and creating robust programs. Through hands-on programming tasks in Python, they learn to design, write, test, and refine their own programs.
The course is engaging and practical, fostering creativity, problem-solving, and a deep understanding of core computer science concepts. Students analyse problems, devise solutions, and gain valuable programming expertise.
QG Super Curriculum
Computer Science at Queen’s Gate School places a strong emphasis on developing independent thinking and advanced problem-solving skills. We aim to inspire students to approach technology and programming with curiosity, creativity, and a confident ‘can-do’ attitude.
Our commitment to nurturing these qualities is further enriched by a range of extra-curricular opportunities. Highlights include our annual Code and Cipher Workshop at the historic Bletchley Park, where students gain unique insights into the origins of modern computing, and our Robotics Club, which encourages hands-on experimentation and collaboration. These activities foster a deeper understanding of Computer Science while sparking a lasting passion for the subject.
