We are serious about science at Queen’s Gate School, and National Science Week is always a highlight of our school calendar. Science Week 2026 was no exception, with a week full of hands-on learning, mind-blowing demonstrations, and immersive experiences that left our students inspired, curious and wowed!
The week began with an exciting visit from scientists from The Royal Institution, who delivered interactive shows for both Junior and Senior students on the science of renewable energy. Students explored the chemistry, physics, and history of our planet’s natural resources, learned about the impact of CO₂ on the environment, and discovered the technology behind creating a more sustainable society. They also delved into the science of generating, transferring, and storing electricity through a medley of spectacular demonstrations.
A highlight for Senior girls was Explorer Dome, a giant inflatable structure which once inside, projected a gigantic cell. Inside, they explored the units of life—from organisms to organelles—and discussed the diversity, scale, form, and function of living things, as well as the marvels of the genetic code.
Meanwhile, Junior students enjoyed a VR headset experience that brought the underwater world to life. Zoo Lab bought an array of small animals for junior girls to handle including a Giant African Land Snail. Year 7 played Chemical Battleships and created fruit batteries from lemons. Year 8 created sugar density towers as part of a physics workshop, Year 9 donned SOCO suits and got busy examining substances in their Forensics workshop, Year 11 attempted a cloning experiment and 12 went all the way to London Zoo as part of their studies into animal conservation.
Science Week at Queen’s Gate is not just for pupils! A special parent engagement session saw Year 7 students leading their parents through a science experiments typical of lessons in the school labs. Parents were fully immersed in the scientific fun, gaining insight into how to conduct an experiment safely.
Encouraging enjoyment of science starts at a young age at Queen’s Gate. From Year 3 girls can take part in our co-curricular STEM Club, and the Science Cadette programme from Year 4. Junior pupils can even earn their Queen’s Gate Bunsen Burner Licence, once they have demonstrated they have the knowledge and skills needed to use lab equipment safely and confidently.
Our jam-packed Science Week also included the 10 Year anniversary of the official opening of the School’s science laboratories in 2016 by Queen’s Gate alumna, Queen Camilla (then Duchess of Cornwall). In true Queen’s Gate style, we held celebratory science themed bake sale in aid of Save the Children.
Just another 52 weeks until Science Week 2027 – we can’t wait!
