On Friday the 2nd December Queen’s Gate joined many other schools around the country to celebrate Number Day and raise money for the NSPCC.
Early on Friday morning, Mrs McCann and Mrs Rose put on their 118 outfits, complete with moustaches and headbands to hand out a Number Day Quiz. Teachers donned their numbers and pupils were given a page of clues to find which teacher was wearing the number described. Two LIV girls were the first to hand in correct entries, having discovered amongst others, that Miss Fox was ‘in her prime’, Mrs Ditchfield ‘irrational’ and Mr Alter was ‘perfect’.
A very efficient Remove committee had ensured that tables were covered with a range of delicious cupcakes and cookies by morning break on Friday, carefully decorated with iced numbers. Doughnuts were permitted for their zero-like shape and hundreds and thousands were considered to be a fitting cake decoration for the occasion. By the end of break Mrs Rose and Mrs McCann had stocked up of enough treats for their Friday afternoon VIth form triple Mathematics lessons. After a taxing trigonometric equation in one UVIth lesson, it was deemed that the gingerbread numbered stars were simply delicious.
Equally exciting events went on in the Junior School where pupils were challenged to count the number of stripes on Mrs Webb’s jumper, hidden under her jacket. 1B carried out an investigation. They chose another teacher of same height as Mrs Webb, measured her, worked out the width of the stripes, estimated the number of stripes on her arm, added it together and, although their efforts did not yield the correct answer they got an award for trying! The rest of the school invented codes to send secret messages.
Due to the combined efforts of the Junior and Senior school we raised a total of £527.40 for charity. Next year, the 188 duo may well reappear, and we hope to see more girls in full number gear.
