Our Great Expectations

For this year’s Senior School play, the theatre was bigger, the storylines were bigger and the cast… well the cast was perfectly-sized and plenty talented to combat the complex storylines that Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations has to offer.
The adaptation, written by Nick Ormerod and Declan Connellan for the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2005, uses a rotation of characters for the first person narrative – with members of the company placed in partial darkness around the edges of the stage to give the element of voiceovers.RADA’s Studio Theatre in Bloomsbury played host to the Senior School Drama Department over Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 March, where Dickens’ bildungsroman depicting orphan Pip and his formative experiences was performed by a cast of pupils from the lower and upper parts of the School.
Striking performances from Lara Brewer (Pip), Amandine Bodet Lefevre (Estella), Amelie Thompson (Magwitch), Lara Garvie (Herbert Pocket) and Bonnie Goudie (Miss Havisham) were supported ably by younger pupils Honor Makhlouf (Joe Gargery), Kiki Sharp (Young Pip) and Aria Singh-Bernita (Young Estella) and a whole host of the school’s most promising young actors.
A wonderful production team beavered away behind the seams, and thanks go to everyone involved in making this such a fantastic year for Senior School Drama.
