Dr Guy Sutton – Consciousness And How It May Be Altered
Tuesday 8 January @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm| Free
Dr Guy Sutton returns to Queen’s Gate to present the lecture, Consciousness And How It May Be Altered. Dr Sutton specialises in advances in neuroscience and his previous academic appointments have been held at Manchester and Cambridge Universities.
Dr Sutton says, ‘We will begin by attempting to define consciousness (a difficult task in itself) and then consider whether all animals possess it. Is a worm conscious? A bat, a dog, a dolphin? How complex must a nervous system be for consciousness to arise? Is a human foetus conscious? If so, when during prenatal development does it emerge? If not, what kinds of postnatal brain activity and structure are associated with it? What happens to consciousness when the brain is damaged and what can learn about it from studying patients undergoing general anaesthesia or in coma states? This is a lecture intended to make you think about the very nature of being human (and, non-human)!’
This lecture is FREE but booking is essential!
